Aloe vera is a sculptural plant that typically forms compact, spiralling rosettes of fleshy, triangular leaves, often toothed along the edges. They are suitable for containers, making them ideal for conservatories and as houseplants, as well as for outdoor placement in summer. Aloes prefer full light and good ventilation, growing best in a peat-free cactus compost. They are valued for the sap extracted from their leaves, which is used in cosmetics and medicines, and can be applied to burns for its cooling properties.
