Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii, commonly known as Chinese lantern, thrives in well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. It grows to a height of 0.5-1 metre and spreads 1-1.5 metres. This perennial features oval green leaves, white flowers in summer, and striking orange lantern-shaped calyces that enclose red berries. It can be harmful if consumed, except for the ripe fruit, and may suffer from caterpillar damage. For propagation, seeds can be sown in spring, and it is generally disease-free.
